Why Create the Philosophy of Balance?
The Philosophy of Balance is a personal philosophy for improvement of the self, the relationship with those around you, and ultimately society and Life as a whole.
A natural question that may arise is: Why did I create and write down this philosophy in the first place?
There’s not one singular answer. Rather, I have many reasons for this. I will go over them one by one, in no particular order.
To Reduce Polarisation
Today, the world is an increasingly polarised place. There’s political instability, wars, and people are becoming increasingly deaf to other’s arguments.
I was always a big believer in democracy — still am! — but obviously the system is not without its faults either. This already led me to write a blog post on the New Monarchy a few months ago, but proposing a successor to democracy itself isn’t going to solve the polarisation we are struggling with today. I don’t want to give up on democracy yet, so there is more to do.
What more can I do? If we can bring people to each other again, make them listen to each other again, that does help. I think there are many ways that we can achieve this. For me, defining a philosophy that I believe can be embraced by people on either end of the political spectrum is my way of trying to achieve that.
To Make People Believe
This may sound as if I’m trying to propagate some kind of gospel, and in a way I am. It’s just not necessarily a Christian gospel. Nor is it really a religious gospel at all. I am trying to make people believe in spirituality, because I believe that is part of the path to happiness. And why wouldn’t I want to share that?
I’m calling this belief in spirituality the belief in the Universal God. I do this because I believe that this belief is a belief in God. It’s the same God that the Bible tells us to believe in. But it’s Universal, because you don’t need the Bible to believe in it.
This Universal quality gives us a connection with anyone else who accepts the Philosophy of Balance. So the more people believe in the Philosophy of Balance, regardless of whether they are otherwise religious or not, the more people will share that connection. And that connection will give them a base for constructive dialogue. This is how we can make the world better for everyone.
Why wouldn’t I want to share that?
To Educate
Ever since I became a father, I started thinking about topics such as morality again. I’m not religious, which means I don’t have a frame of reference to define my morality. But how can I teach my son about things such as morality, when I don’t have a good grasp on it myself?
I asked around and found that many non-religious people around me don’t have a good grasp on it. Most people had some ideas, but pressed on why they believed those ideas, things quickly became murky.
So I set out to see if I could do better. To educate my son, but maybe also those around me.
Because I Can
I always knew that writing something such as a Philosophy of Balance would be quite a challenging task. Maybe preposterous even.
But at the same time I also knew that I might actually have a shot at it. As a writer, with a previous novel published, I know I have the ability and stamina to work on a long-term and in-depth project like this. From my career as a software engineer, I have also built a tremendous amount of skill in solving complex problems, even though of an entirely different nature. And yet due to my parents, one of which is Christian and another is Jewish, I also held a lifelong fascination with religion. And finally, I also noticed that my rational conviction towards spirituality is a not-so-common viewpoint, one that may hopefully lead to insights not often considered by others.
So these ingredients helped to convince me that maybe I can. And although the book is not finished yet, at the time of writing this, I’m far enough advanced that I’m happy to say that it looks like yes, I could.
